Maths-Twister

Monday, June 23rd, 2008

Want to learn your number bonds* and get some exercise?

Try Maths-Twister! In this video, a teacher demonstrates a useful classroom game to help students practise their number facts and mental arithmetic by playing a variation on the classic game ‘Twister’.

Read on for our take on the ‘Maths-Twister’ recipe, or watch the video on the BBC’s new ‘Backpage’ website where - as they put it - ”parents of primary school kids share their top video tips about helping with homework.”

Many of the homework hints give physical ways of learning subjects, which can be handy if you’re desperate to enjoy the sunshine. We recommend our home students use Maths-Whizz for between 60 and 90 minutes a week, which gives lots of time for exploring maths in the real world - give it a try!

Pure Maths!

Friday, June 13th, 2008

It’s not as if mathematicians needed proof that theirs was the purest science, but this cartoon merely serves to reinforce the fact, though sociologists and psychologists may find themselves disagreeing…

Maths Emergency!

Wednesday, May 7th, 2008

If you’re struggling with maths homework and it seems nobody can help, why not call the emergency services!

This is transcript and audio from a call four-year-old ‘Johnny’ made to 911 (the US equivalent of 999) when he was struggling with his maths. It’s no wonder he needed help from America’s finest; we wouldn’t expect our students to attempt such subtraction questions until Year 1 (roughly age 6) at least…

Hollywood Maths 2008

Tuesday, April 29th, 2008

In our unending quest to find heroic men and women who can save the world and solve quadratic equations, we find two films to look out for this spring:

21. Kevin Spacey and a bunch of improbably attractive MIT maths students take Las Vegas by storm with their clever card-counting ways.

The Oxford Murders. Fissure-faced screen legend John Hurt plays another prof (this time at the eponymous university) who helps solve a murder conspiracy apparently linked by maths symbols.

Watch, and - maybe, just maybe - learn.

Learn maths - win money!

Tuesday, November 13th, 2007

If ever proof was needed that maths comes in handy when you least expect it, it is in this depressing-if-it-wasn’t-funny story from the Manchester Evening News.

Camelot, the lottery and gaming firm, has had to withdraw its ‘Cool Cash’ scratchcard from sale, after it transpired the apparently simple challenge presented on the cards was beyond many of its customers.
