Eureka!

We don’t all have budding Carol Vordermans at home, but how can you help kids struggling with their maths if you’re not very good at it yourself? The answer could be to visit mathswhizz. com.

It’s an online tutoring service for primary school children which covers the school curriculum, but uses vibrant animation and interactive exercises to help get the message across. Easy to use and exceptional value for money, a monthly subscription costs £27.50.

Maths resources - Fun help online

Teachers and parents of a certain age will fondly recall Johnny Ball, whose inventive television programmes like Think of a Number made maths approachable and intriguing. The same spirit of serious fun is found in mathsWhizz, a personal online maths tutor rogramme warmly endorsed by Ball.

It has grown out of the MathsWhizz interactive CDs, familiar to many primary schools, and is available through subscription. Progress through the scheme evolves in response to the child’s performance as their understanding grows. While a daily lesson lasts about 45 minutes, participants can access more than 1,000 hours of activities from their virtual “bedroom”. (more…)

Maths website puts fun back in the equation Former Highgate pupil helps found online tutor A former Highgate School pupil is one of the brains behind a new online home tutor for primary school children. Ben Keogh is one of the founders of Maths-Whizz. com, a web-based programme for children aged five to 11.

The 28yearold Oxford graduate, from Cholmley Park, said Maths-Whizz puts the fun back into learning. He said it also covers the entire national curriculum. He said: “We feel we have a really good service which genuinely helps children with their maths. Many children get it into their heads that they cannot do maths and they stop trying. A survey last year found that one in four state school pupils get private tuition and one in eight is for maths. A monthly subscription costs the same as a standard hour of private tuition”. (more…)

Gee Whizz

One in eight children need extra maths tuition, a statistic which encouraged Whizz Education to set up Maths.whizz.com (launched this September), a personal online tutoring service. The tutoring service covers the whole UK maths curriculum and is also designed to be fun to use, with thousands of animated characters and interactive games to help children get to grips with mathematical topics.

Developed by leading educationalists, it assesses each child individually, creating personalised lessons and evolving with the child as they improve. The price of a month’s subscription is £27.50.
