How often can my child use Maths-Whizz?

Thursday, March 13th, 2008

Your child can access lessons from their virtual bedroom as often as they like. The lessons take the form of colourful interactive animations, which means children enjoy the experience whilst learning. To avoid burn out, we recommend parents should restrict lessons to no more than 45 minutes per day. This is important as best results are achieved using Maths-Whizz regularly over a sustained period of time, e.g. 20 - 45 minute sessions 2-3 times a week.

The Maths-Whizz bedroom ’shop’, where our online users get the chance to spend their hard-earned credits, now features a fun and simple new arcade game - ‘Why Did the Chicken Cross the Road?

The game, inspired by the arcade classic, Frogger, asks you to help our hapless chicken across multi-lane motorways and croc-infested waters. This is definitely more of a challenge than your every-day chicken stroll and the levels get steadily harder as you progress. Dodge the cars and trucks, hop across the turtles’ and crocodiles’ backs and catch all the worms to finish each level.

Rising up the leagues

Wednesday, January 2nd, 2008

Maths-Whizz Teachers’ resource has been well-represented in the results of the Primary Schools League Tables, released by the Department for Children, Schools and Families last December.

14 of the 101 English schools “most improved” in their Key Stage 2 tests between 2004 and 2007 use Maths-Whizz Teachers’ Resource. Even better, 5 of the 30 schools in London which achieved a 100% score in Maths (i.e. all pupils at Level 4 or better), have bought Maths-Whizz for their pupils.

This confirms our understanding that many of the most forward-thinking and successful primary schools use Maths-Whizz Teachers’ Resource. We find that using Maths-Whizz is a sign of good teaching and good teaching is often a by-product of using Maths-Whizz.

We never designed our software to be a crutch for incompetent or lazy teachers, but rather an engaging resource for busy, active, stimulating schol environments that builds on good classroom practice and further encourages it. The league table results are further proof of this.

The Maths-Whizz Christmas Adventure will be available online from 1st December.

Following on from our very successful Amazon Adventure over the Summer, Maths-Whizz brings you the Christmas Adventure - a seasonal selection of games, challenges and factsheets to keep kids entertained between Maths-Whizz lessons.

The Christmas Adventure will appear as a festively-decorated miniature house, on the desk in users’ bedrooms. Kids can click the house to get started.

As with the Amazon Adventure, students must earn the right to have a bit of fun on the Christmas Adventure. For every thirty points a student scores using the Maths-Whizz tutor, he or she wins a star to spend in the Christmas Adventure.

Have a go (if you’re cleverer than a 13 year-old)

Tuesday, November 20th, 2007

Just an update to say that our sample exercise viewer has now been updated to include new age 13 material.

Get to grips with some Key Stage 3 maths in three topics:

  • Percentages, Ratio and Proportion
  • Sequences, Functions and Graphs
  • Equations, Formulae and Identities

If you know your areas of trapeziums, your percentage calculations and your linear equations, you’ll do just fine!
