Little and Often (updated!)

Students learn best in sessions of around 20 to 30 minutes.

We now recommend that students use the Maths-Whizz tutor for between 40 and 60 minutes a week. Dividing that time into blocks of 20 minutes will help your child’s concentration and recall.

Students studying in Key Stage 1 should aim for 2 x 20 minutes a week, whilst students in Key Stages 2 and 3 should try to do 3 x 20 minutes each week.

It is understood that as someone works on a particular subject for a stretch of time his or her understanding of the subject increases, but the recall decreases. In other words shorter, more manageable sessions with the tutor will help your child retain progress made with Maths-Whizz, but longer sessions with the revision tool will help your child understand more troublesome subjects.

Note that our Maths-Whizz usage reports only record the time spent doing exercises in the Tutor mode. They do not show time spent revising, or using the bedroom. For this reason our recommended usage applies only to work done in the Tutor.

Do you set the lessons, or does our child choose what to work on?

    Jan,

We set the lessons, following an initial assessment. The assessment establishes the child’s educational level across the core maths topics; ongoing performance by the child after the assessment periodically re-establishes educational levels and re-sets the lesson schedule.

I hope this answers your question.
