Commutative property It makes no difference in which order two numbers are multiplied. The commutative property does not apply to division

Factor One of two or more numbers that are multiplied together to obtain a product. Factors are whole numbers which can be divided exactly into a given number.

Multiple A multiple of a number is the product of that number and an integer.

Multiplication An operation on two numbers that tells how many in all. The first number is the number of sets and the second number tells how many in each set. When multiplying we use the times sign 'x'.

Multiplication games & exercises

Multiplication is commutative. This means that you can do multiplication (as with addition) in any order. 'Five sets of eight' has the same result as 'eight sets of five'.

But when you combine multiplication with another operation (see our first year 5 multiplication exercise), you have to be careful when you multiply. BODMAS, the nifty name that helps you remember order of operations, goes like this:

Brackets, Other, Division, Multiplication, Addition, Subtraction

If in doubt, when multiplication is mixed up in an equation with other operations, follow BODMAS!
