At Whizz Education, we’re always speaking with parents to find out how they’re getting the most out of Math-Whizz and home learning with their children. Earlier this month, we spoke with David, teacher and dad of three, to find out how his son Ray has been getting on with learning at home during lockdown.

Whizz Education: Hi David! Please introduce yourself and a bit about your family.
D: I have three children, two older boys who used Math-Whizz and Ray who is 9 years old. All our kids have used Math-Whizz from a young age. I run a further education college. I really wish there was a Math-Whizz for 16-19 year olds!
W: How does Ray use Math-Whizz?
D: Ray is a bright young kid who absolutely loves Math – he has a logical brain! Ray uses it everyday apart from weekends. We have ensured to incorporate as part of his daily routine. He likes that it is short and sharp.He went back on Math-Whizz at the start of the lockdown, the great thing is you can easily reset the initial assessment! The assessment picked up some key topics that he was struggling with we weren’t aware of such as Measures. Just three months later the improvement is huge – Math-Whizz has filled in the gaps!
W: How has Math-Whizz supported you during covid-19 crisis?
D: For us it was a peace of mind that the education was continuing and getting feedback from the reports. Especially more important as at the movement we are not having the level of feedback from teachers as parents we had pre covid-19. It’s a long time to be out of education and we are now over half the academic year out. The great thing is Ray can use it independently, and we allow him to make mistakes. We leave him to work on Math-Whizz and help if needed.
W: What advice do you have for other parents whose children use Math-Whizz?
D: Ensure you keep encouraging your child every day! Get them in the habit of 15-20 mins per day and read the reports. Do also share these reports with the teacher. Ray’s teacher called us to see how he was doing and we shared the information. The more we can work together, the more it is beneficial for our children.
W: What does your child like most about Math-Whizz?
D: He finds it fun! Ray thrives off getting things right especially when he previously got it wrong. He doesn’t find it laborious, he will give us feedback or explain how he was doing. Short, sharp and targeted. If a child enjoys Math – it was half the battle! Working in post 16 education, 1800 students who are retaking english and math GCSE. We are not teaching the Math that is required and online learning is going to be crucial. Taking the fear away is super important! We find students are scared at Math and it’s difficult to get them over the barrier. Too often people are left behind!
W: How do you monitor your child’s progress?
D: We get the reports and over lockdown we have had other communication. Mini competition between a few children. Different metrics. Check weekly. Ray provides feedback.
