As a parent or teacher with access to Math-Whizz Tutoring Plus Reports, you’ll already know that it’s crucial to keep track of how much time your children spend learning with the Math-Whizz Tutor. You’ll also know how important it is that children continue to refresh and reinforce their knowledge of topics that they have previously learned.
That’s why Math-Whizz Tutoring Plus now records time spent consolidating learning within Topic Bank and Replay, in addition to time spent on new learning objectives in Tutor. To make sure you get the most out of your Math-Whizz subscription, read the important information below and then log in to check out these new changes for yourself.
What are ‘Topic Bank’ and ‘Replay’?
In order to make long-term and sustainable progress, it’s not always enough to do each lesson once before building up layers of complexity. Children need to learn new concepts and reinforce their understanding of previous lessons.
This is where the much-loved concept of ‘revision’ comes in… but we tend of avoid that word here at Whizz; instead, Math-Whizz children get to earn extra credits in Topic Bank and Replay, subsequently consolidating their knowledge as a result of having fun.
These are ideal companions to the virtual tutor that allow teachers and parents to direct students towards revision. For students, they’re fun games and challenges!
As you might expect, Topic Bank is a bank of, well, topics. Students have access to all exercises up to ¾ of a year below their current Math Age™ in each topic. Here they can access lower-level content to fill in any knowledge gaps and independently consolidate their knowledge – supporting them to scaffold their learning and grow in confidence.
Similarly, Replay allows students to access and ‘replay’ all previously passed exercises (with a result of 70% or more). Here they can refresh their knowledge, improve their scores and even create challenges against other students around the world (by choosing an exercise and clicking ‘Create Challenge’).
This means that both Topic Bank and Replay allow teachers and parents to direct students to any topic that they are currently working on in class or with the virtual tutor. They are the natural companions to the virtual tutoring experience: giving you and your children ownership over their learning journeys.
So what’s new?
To ensure that you know how much time your children spend going over previous topics and consolidating their knowledge, usage time in Topic Bank is now recorded alongside time in Replay and Tutor.
This means that exercises completed in these areas will now contribute to the usage journey that they see (and credits that they earn!) every time they complete a new exercise.
Lessons completed in either of these areas will also show up in your Reports as ‘Replay’.
To make sure your children are motivated to keep practising, they also earn up to 10 credits for every Topic Bank or Replay exercise that improves their previous best performance.
By rewarding them for their (fun!) work, your children will develop lasting understanding in all areas.
