With the new SATs format stressing reasoning skills and the National Curriculum emphasising understanding, teachers need to push students for deeper mathematical knowledge and skills.
To do that, teachers need to be able to understand their students’ progress and abilities as they develop; they need assessment for learning in maths.
But with the removal of National Curriculum Levels, many teachers are finding it tougher to make assessment work for them. On top of that, deeper mathematical knowledge and skills like reasoning and problem-solving can be difficult to assess in day-to-day teaching.
